I think you should invite nlindq and his sound and video cards over to test these theories out. Cheaper than upgrading and less risky! Morrowind got much more stable once he installed Win2000.
I've got a paid-for copy of XP Pro, too, but I'll be upgrading from Win95. I've got to save up to upgrade the rest of my creaky ol' computer though: upgrade list.
