So, I got it into my head to make some use of the 60 GB of free hard drive space on my machine and rip all the CDs in the house (except compilations by friends because it seems like I pretty much need to go through those one song at a time).  I had downloaded the free iTunes player some time back -- and I totally forget why.  And this seemed like a very convenient way of ripping and cataloging the music.  Yes, I know the rest of you have been doing this for years, but I'm slow and for some reason wasn't that interested until recently.

So, it's done.  2,775 songs and 9.64 GB of space.  I don't quite have everything either.  The LotR BBC radio play isn't in there.  A couple of new CDs that [livejournal.com profile] purplejavatroll bought recently aren't in there.  I replaced one missing CD (Smash - The Offspring) from an online store (not iTunes because -- get this -- it isn't available in their Canadian store and their site only takes me to the Canadian store, but Google assures me it's available on their US site).  A quick look shows me I'm going to have similar problems with some Rush albums I'd like to own.

Fuckers.

iTunes rips to mp4 (or m4a, apple's version of the same thing) by default and I let it. It's configured to share openly, so I haven't had any trouble playing with Winamp instead or dumping tunes onto a flash drive and take to work. (The only problem there is that my headphones don't really reach. And it's not the kind of work environment where I'm likely to crank my music.)
