Alone together?

handsliveFrom link of a link, as it were. Some guys wrote a bot and sent it out into World of Warcraft where it collected all kinds of statistics about the people playing. And they wrote up some findings. I have to say, what they find meshes very well with my own experience and even with the changing nature of my own primary guild on Azjol-Nerub. The stats about guilds and player interactions with their own guilds is also exactly my experience with the avenging blades and also with No Sumus Tempestas.
When I joined the avenging blades it was in the 90th percentile. There were usually over 20 people logged in whenever I was logged in. NST is the same way right now. Over time, our level 60s have all moved to an affiliated guild in order to prep for end game instances. The result is a much smaller and less active population. Now there are usually less than 10 people on and frequently the number is more like 5.
However, I see this as a normal evolution in the development of the guild. A social guild selects members differently than one created for the management of instance playing, raids, and PvP. I actually like the idea of an affiliated guild, too. I've noticed before that some guilds have a real social stigma against moving around, which can interfere a bit if what you need a guild for changes over time. It also allows, I think, the possibility of having a close-knit group in one place and a more open one close by that one can interface with. Sadly, the communication tools for making this easy are not readily available in the game, but there are some possible ways of doing it, I think.
The avenging blades approach to this is to have one or two players who may switch back and forth with their alts or who can whisper back and forth to coordinate things with the other guild in specific circumstances (like inviting for an instance). And there's extensive use of web-based scheduling tools to plan raids.
