I didn't see the episode, so I can't speak to its quality, but he's wrong about one thing: it didn't end after season four, it ended after season two. A bunch of us just deluded ourselves for another two seasons.
I can only speculate. In fact, I was half thinking he was more spoofing the kind of "pose for a picture of the FOOTURE" look of the portrait. But I can make some stuff up if you like, too.
Edison is, like, the perfect image to mock on the Intarwebs. He's this guy with a badass rep as an inventor who spent a lot of time in intellectual property disputes with other inventors when he wasn't busy promoting his own notion of what future networks would look like. In many respects he's the prototypical net godling. He'd have been a big thing on Slashdot or an exec at Google.
So, the picture in those 'edison' shots is of the first guy to be plugged directly into a media communication system. And what if he foresaw the rise of intensely free pr0n spam? Or bitter, anti-social dweebs in the dark posting rant du jour while drinking too many Redbulls? What if he was one of those dweebs? (See the bit in Wikipedia about Tesla's comments on Edison's death (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edison#Work_relations).)
So, I guess, it's funny because Edison and the Internet are a sensible but anachronistic combination.
