[livejournal.com profile] purplejavatroll and I were talking last night about how much of the fiction we've read takes place in or around London, how much of it contains scenes in London. Classics by Fleming, Doyle, Christie, Marsh. Newer comic book stuff both of us have read like Hellblazer, Invisibles, Sandman, Books of Magic.

It still feels surreal to actually be here. And marvelous.

I'm having a lot of trouble typing this. Firstly, the lap top has a UK keyboard and some of the keys are just not where I expect them. Secondly, my right ring finger is covered with a bandage just now.

And that's an interesting story. A point to you, dear reader: Never stick your finger in a 7000 rpm CPU fan. Yes, yes, I know. It would never occur to you.

The happy news is that, the fan being of plastic construction, I basically got a nasty bruise that broke the skin open across the tip of the finger. It bled a lot at first, but it doesn't hurt that much. I'm wondering if the laceration is going to leave a scar or not. If it does, it's going to leave a very interesting mark.

We spent the first day wandering around South Bank and saw so many things that I'm afraid my brain has fused. :-) We spent today visiting the VA. Many pretty things. I've now gained an appreciation for the phrase "jewel encrusted".

In totally unrelated news, I had a very interesting last two days at work. The very last day was spent almost entirely with J since he's my backup. I actually think he'll do fine. His confidence in my documentation seemed increased at the end. I guess we'll see how he feels when I get back.

The day before that was so incredibly dull that I put down about 1200 words of a short story involving a bicycle commuter and a shopping cart. It centers very much on the shopping cart right now, which means there's very little dialog or actual human interaction, but I can see I'm going to need to go back and flesh things out. It's also not quite finished in terms of story line (I didn't finish the first "swoop" as Jae would say). I was absolutely amazed at how little text there actually is in 1000 words. To think I used to be intimidated by that. The truth is I've never really thought about how much text I write in one of these entries or in the documentation I work on or in some e-mails I've written.

Anyway, if I have time during this holiday, I may grab the backup I stored outside of work and look more at it. Is it kosher to post 2000+ words to LJ? :-)
